KUCHING: Congress of Unions of Employees in Public Service (Cuepacs) is requesting state governments to consider giving land to all government servants for them to build houses upon retirement.<\/span><\/div>\n
Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda said while the majority of civil servants were serving for more than 30 years \u2013 some over 40 years \u2013 many received nothing in the end.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cSo, as a token of appreciation to the government servants for their services, it would be most appreciated if state governments could consider giving land lots to us upon retirement.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThis would mean that the government will give 1.5 million land lots. They can do it by creating land banks but all we need to do is be united,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/div>\n
Azih stated this when speaking at Cuepacs Sarawak annual dinner here on Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n
He said the justification for this was that a bigger section of the present civil servants could not even buy a house when the salaries they received were still low compared with the very high cost of living today.<\/span><\/div>\n
He asserted that the salary of employees in the supporting Group I and II were only RM805 and RM820 respectively, well below the national poverty line of RM880.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cTherefore we are calling the government to improve and transform with urgency the 252 public service schemes in line with the increasing cost of living,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/div>\n
He cautioned that if all these could not be resolved, then many of them would be forced to \u201cdrink plain water\u201d as they could not afford other drinks.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThese are only few of the challenges we are going to face in the years to come. Next year, which is the closing for the 10th Malaysian Plan, it will be more challenging for us in the civil service.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cSo in order to face the challenges, the most important thing is for us to be united. If there is no unity among us I am afraid that our voice will not be heard and if we cannot fight for ourselves, no one will do it for us,\u201d he disclosed.<\/span><\/div>\n
However, in order to impress the government, he said they must serve with full commitment and integrity.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWe have to make sure that our Key Performance Index (KPI) is always up to mark and not below par if we want the government to meet our requests; or else the people out there who are our clients will be angry if the government gives anything that we want but our service is lousy,\u201d he stated<\/span><\/div>\n
