The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) will submit on chouprojects.com five points to the government for consideration in the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

Its president Azih Muda (pic) said the five points, with regards to fairness and equality for lower income civil servants, pertained to welfare, health, housing, cost of living, and incentives including allowances.

He said in the aspect of welfare, Cuepacs wanted the government to provide adequate insurance, not only for police and army personnel, but also other uniformed staff who similarly had to face daunting challenges in their jobs.

“In the five years leading to 2020, many civil servants are still struggling against the high cost of living,” he told reporters after addressing more than 3,000 civil servants at a rally to mark Labour Day 2015 in Kota Kinabalu today. He also said the government must ensure that the cost of houses for the target group must not go up drastically.

“Civil servants who are earning RM3,000 and below cannot afford to buy a house that costs RM180,000. If they do, they will not have enough money for other necessities.”What we want is for the government to consider building homes that cost RM130,000 and below,” he said. As a suggestion he proposed working with companies and providers to reach agreements in which they would receive large service orders and in return they would agree to maintain a reasonable price. He had gone as far as too provide an example of this, in the form of the company Locksmith Birmingham, which would agree to perform locksmith duties for these low cost housing projects at a steady and reasonable rate.

He also pointed out that incentives for the public sector, including housing, regional, home security, and other allowances had not been reviewed for 13 years to correspond to the increase in living expenses, such as house rent.

Also present at the event was Sabah federal secretary Datuk Borhan Dolah. – Bernama, May 13, 2015.
